How to Service Your Furnace Filter

Blog

The furnace is a key part of any central air system. It is a large factor in the overall airflow of your heating and air-conditioning system. If you think that your furnace is not being as productive as it should be, you might be able to fix the problem on your own. Often, you can just replace the filter and clean out the compartment to significantly improve the energy efficiency of your furnace. This article explains how to safely and effectively do this simple project.

Locating and Removing the Furnace Filter

The first thing you need to do is locate and remove the furnace filter. The filter is actually located on the outside of the main furnace compartment. In most cases, you don't need any tools to actually pull out the furnace. On some older units, you might need to remove a couple of screws to loosen the access panel that covers the filter. Once you get the filter out, you should inspect it. If it is really dirty, you will want to replace it with a new one.

Cleaning the Filter Compartment

If your filter is dirty, the compartment will also be dirty. You definitely want to clean out the department as well as possible before putting a new filter in place, or else it will just get dirtied up too. The best way to do this is to use a hose vacuum with a brush attachment. This should allow you to get deep inside the compartment and remove most of the dirt. However, you should inspect the compartment with a flashlight. There is always a chance that there could be moisture that causes the dirt to stick to the sidewalls. If this is the case, you need to try and reach in there and clean it out with a damp rag.

Replacing the Filter

To make sure you get the right replacement, you should just take your old filter into the store. There will be many filters that come in similar sizes, so you will want to also make sure that the model number matches.

As you can see, replacing your filter and cleaning out the compartment is not exactly technical or difficult work. However, it can have quite a dramatic effect on energy usage associated with your furnace. You will probably also enjoy better airflow when your AC and heater are running well. Replace the filter now to start running a greener household.

Since the buyers wanted in, I had to place most of my belongings in a self-storage facility. Fortunately, I found one that had everything that I needed.
